What the room is like

  • Dress for a serious room. There is no costume and no uniform.
  • We stand, sit, and kneel as the book asks. Follow a neighbor. You will not be corrected in public.
  • Children are expected to learn the room, not be entertained out of it.
  • Screens stay in a pocket. The point of being here is to be here.
  • You need not receive communion. Common prayer does not require a common certainty.

Holy Communion

The shape of the service

We use the cadences of the old prayer book, in English a person can hear. We are not performing antiquity. The words are load-bearing.

  1. 01

    Opening sentence

We begin with a sentence of scripture, not an announcement.

  2. 02

    Confession

Said together. The room does not interview you about it.

  3. 03

    Psalm

Sung or said. Mercy and truth are allowed to meet.

  4. 04

    Lesson

Read so it can be heard. Not performed.

  5. 05

    Sermon

Short. It serves the holding. It is not a rally.

  6. 06

    Creed

We say it. We do not examine one another on it.

  7. 07

    Prayers

For the city, for honest work, for those with enough and those without, for the freedom of conscience.

  8. 08

    Offering

Necessary. A gift, not a sacrifice.

  9. 09

    Communion

Come forward, or stay in the pew. No one is counted either way.

  10. 10

    Dismissal

The service ends. The three interests do not.

The collect of the parish

Almighty God, who set Michael to keep the freedom of souls, and George to stand where the ground is real: preserve this parish from every trade of one for the other; that our prayer may be common and our belief unforced, and that our work may tell the truth; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

“Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other.”

Psalm 85

If the holding is one you can pray inside, sit with the six questions and leave a notice of intention.
